OBJECTIVES OF ARET HAVEN FOUNDATION

Tackling Early Marriages and Teenage Pregnancy

In many African traditional societies, men often hold decision-making power at the household level. Among pastoralist communities, there exists a rich socio-cultural and spiritual heritage that can be harnessed as a force for social good. Spiritual and community leaders serve as thought leaders and opinion shapers, making them crucial voices in addressing the issues of early marriages and teenage pregnancy. Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is actively engaging these leaders in the process, doing so with respect and cultural sensitivity to ensure meaningful and sustainable impact.

Educating Girls on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a violation of human rights and a harmful practice rooted in deeply entrenched gender inequality. Every girl and woman has the right to live free from this form of violence, which carries devastating physical, psychological, and social consequences. Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is committed to raising awareness about FGM by organizing workshops and seminars that educate girls on the risks involved and empower them to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures.

Keeping Girls in School During Menstruation

Menstruation is a normal and healthy part of life—it should never be a barrier to a girl’s education or her dreams. Having been born, raised, and educated near the Maasai community in Kajiado County, I have witnessed first-hand the shame, stigma, and degrading language often associated with menstruation. Many girls miss three to five days of school each month due to a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, often resorting to unhygienic alternatives during their periods.
Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is committed to ensuring that girls remain in school throughout the month, just like boys. As part of this effort, AHF provides hygiene packs to girls and is working toward a long-term solution by producing reusable sanitary pads. This initiative involves purchasing sewing machines, sourcing materials, and training local women in each area to produce reusable pads—empowering communities while preserving the dignity and health of girls

Providing a Safe Haven for Girls Escaping Early Marriages and FGM)

Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is dedicated to supporting girls from vulnerable communities to realize their full potential and transition from a path of early motherhood to one of opportunity and empowerment. With support from churches, government authorities, and well-wishers, AHF is working to establish safe havens—rescue shelters primarily in the form of schools—where these girls are welcomed, protected, and given the chance to continue their education in a nurturing environment. These safe spaces serve as a foundation for healing, learning, and building a brighter future.

Educating the Community on the Importance of School

Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is committed to raising awareness within communities—particularly among pastoralist populations—about the long-term value of education. Many parents in these communities often do not see the immediate benefits of schooling and are reluctant to invest in a process that may take nearly 20 years to yield tangible returns. In some cases, girls are viewed primarily as sources of wealth, with early marriage seen as a quicker path to economic gain through dowry. AHF works to challenge these perceptions by sensitizing communities on the transformative power of education—not only for the individual child, but for the broader economic and social development of the entire community.

Supporting Marginalized Groups Through Access to Education

Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) is dedicated to supporting marginalized and vulnerable groups in society, particularly families that are unable to afford education for their daughters due to poverty. To bridge this gap, AHF provides essential support by covering school fees, supplying uniforms, and purchasing books. By removing these financial barriers, AHF empowers girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to access quality education and pursue a brighter, more hopeful future.

Counseling Girls Affected by FGM and Early Marriages

Aret Haven Foundation (AHF) recognizes the deep emotional and psychological trauma experienced by girls who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) or been forced into early marriages. To support their healing and well-being, AHF will organize seminars and workshops focused on counseling and mental health. These sessions aim to provide a safe space for girls to share their experiences, receive professional guidance, manage stress, and prevent harmful outcomes such as depression or suicide. Through compassionate care and support, AHF seeks to help these girls rebuild their confidence and reclaim their futures..
